In the South Pacific Islands of Western Samoa, Polynesian inhabitants have, with New Zealand aid, assumed control of their own affairs, and Western Samoa is the first United Nations Trust Territory to achieve internal self -government. The film shows early morning scenes in the village; tribal elders in traditional council; children singing in school; women roofing a house. Daily work includes the shipping of exports – copra, cocoa and bananas. Samoa is a place of colourful ceremony, and the film closes with a gathering of Samoan people at their ancient capital of Mulinu’u and with children dancing under the palms. betasp telecine from faded 35mm prints

For over 9 years, Metro Ministries has been bringing compassion and hope to the front lines of desolation and destruction. It takes an immense amount of unconditional love, perseverance, and sacrifice to establish a base where volunteers can gather resources, prepare, train, and debrief for the purpose of conducting warfare in this hostile environment. No weapon is furnished for this warfare. Metro Ministries utilizes smiles, meals, tears, home visits, seminars, community outreach, and hugs in fighting these battles. One of the main programs here is the children and youth program, 100-120 kids come through the door one night a week, to be mentored, discipled and loved. Most of these kids live in conditions you could never imagine. What the volunteers of the MetroKidz program offer these kids is a sense of hope, a sense of love and a chance to know there is something better waiting for them. The key to our success at making a difference in such an area of destruction is the sincerity of love for a down cast people, thrown away, and avoided by the masses of our society. There is nothing different about these people compared to those in Haiti, Sudan, Nicaragua, El Salvador, or anywhere else in the world where disaster, disease, famine, and poverty have made ruins. If there were a difference it isn’t in the people, it is the society. Third world countries have no hope. Metro Ministries is a facility where those who are making an attempt to pick themselves up… who choose to …

This power bead roller is constructed of a heavy steel framework that is electro welded for further rigidity. All rotating points have bronze bushings for long life. A powerful industrial grade motor and gearbox drive the rolls forward or reverse. Control of this power bead roll is by a variable speed foot pedal that allows the operator to have both hands free to work the material. The BR-18E power bead roller has a capacity of 18 gauge mild steel and 16 gauge aluminum. The bead depth is adjustable via the top roll. This metal bead roller has an ample 36 throat depth that is perfect for any car builder or restorer that needs to make hoods, deck lids or roof panels. There are dozens of roll sets available (Nylatron) to aid with most body work on planes, cars, or choppers. Like other Baileigh bead rollers, this one comes standard with a heavily constructed floor stand that includes a die rack. This bead roll has been constructed for years of profitable production. Call your Baileigh representative for additional details.

“El Barrio to Cuba with Love” Fundraiser to raise money for humanitarian aid to Cuba and oppose the half a century blockade. On June 10th, in support of Pastors for Peace, a humanitarian aid group, “From El Barrio to Cuba with Love,” features El Barrio Caravan Orchestra with seasoned veterans of Tito Puente, Eddie and Charlie Palmieri, Machito and Ruben Blades, BombaYo, an infectious Bomba and Plena youth group, and reknown Puerto Rican poet Tato Laviera. Promising to be an exciting evening of Spoken Word, music and great food, “From El Barrio to Cuba with Love” will be held at the Casabe Houses at 150 East 121st Street, Lexington Avenue in New York City. Ibrahim Gonzalez from Radio Libre/WBAI, Esperanza Martell, educator and activist, Lillian Jiménez, producer of “Antonia Pantoja: ¡Presente!,” and Luis Cordero from Cemi Underground have come together to pay tribute to the life and work of Lucius Walker, long time civil rights activist and a long time friend of Cuba. In 1988, Mr. Walker formed Pastors for Peace which has now sent hundreds of tons of aid, including medical gear and roofing material, to Latin American countries. Of its 40 missions so far, 21 have been to Cuba, which under a 1963 law is off-limits to American trade. On Sep 12, 2010, Mr. Walker died at the age of 80. His legacy lives on through the work of Pastors for Peace. Headlining the event is El Barrio Caravan Orchestra featuring Luisito Ayala, Andrea Brachfeld, Gilberto “Pupo” Colon, Jr., Andrea …

In this month’s Hand-In-Hand Update we highlight a number of critical projects in Shushi that we’ve been working on since the 2009 “Our Shushi” Armenia Fund telethon. Once the educational and cultural hub of Artsakh, Shushi was all but destroyed during the Artsakh Liberation struggle. As such, it was of utmost importance that we immediately begin work to rebuild the city and revive its cultural prominence. Thus far, we’ve completely repaved three of the Shushi’s five major roads–Aram Manoukian, Garegin Njdeh, and Ghazanchetsots–while simultaneously laying new water pipes throughout the city to guarantee regular access to clean drinking water to up to 80 percent of Shushi’s inhabitants. Our construction crews have also been busy re-roofing 12 multi-story apartment buildings that house 200 families working to finish renovations on the Shushi Cultural Center and the Shushi Abovian School. We’re also in the process of rebuilding the Shushi Vocational School, which will provide training in construction and crafts related skills, such as construction, welding, mechanical repair, etc. And if you haven’t heard the good news yet, we just finished rebuilding the Shushi Central Library. You can read about that project here. ow.ly
